[edit] About Merle McGinnisMerle Lee McGinnis was born 21 January 1901 in Payson, Adams County, Illinois, the son of John William McGinnis (1873-1923) in Missouri) and his wife Florence Alta Robertson (1880-1938). Merle moved to California and attended and graduated college at The University of Southern California (USC), where he was elected class President. After college, Merle went into teaching and taught in San Diego, Los Angeles and Berkeley public schools, then moved into consulting. Merle spent much of his professional life working for supermarket chain Safeway, working his way up to Manager of Personnel Services. He retired from Safeway in 1958.Merle McGinnis served from 1958-1971 as the Director of the Food Distribution Program, later known as the Food Industry Management (FIM) Program at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. After his retirement from Safeway in 1958, Merle McGinnis who was instrumental in establishing the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC) in 1958. In 1964, Merle McGinnis oversaw a $50,000 pledge from the WAFC to "decorate, equip and furnish" a new building on USC's campus that was "to house the University's new food distribution center" [see photo below]. This building is now known as "Hoffman Hall", the home of the Marshall School of Business, and the USC Food Industry Management (FIM) Program . Merle McGinnis passed way in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California on 7 June 1991 at age 90. Image Gallery
