Barbara SMALL or SMALLEY was born circa Oct-1776 in Harwich (birth not recorded) to Joseph SMALL (son of Benjamin SMALL & Patience BAKER) & Mercy GODFREY. She married 1) Reuben BURGESS 29-Mar-1796 at Falmouth and had 6 children, 2) William PHINNEY 28-Mar-1813 at Falmouth and had 3 more children, and 3) John SAWTELLE 16-Apr-1837 in Kennebec Co., ME.

She died 29-May-1860 aged 83y 7m 20d at Harwich and is buried in the Harwich Centre Cemetery, where her gravestone reads "SAWTELLE / Barbara / Wife of / John Sawtelle / Died May 29 1860 / aged 83 years 8 mos. / She has gone to the mansions of rest"

Who were her siblings? In Joseph SMALL's household in 1790 there were 7 females, two males under 16 years, and 3 males over 16. A large family! Were any of them the following? Joseph Jr., James, John S., Benoni, Eunice?

[Falmouth VRs, where Barbara's marriage is found, also contains

  • Eunice Smalle/Small and Ichabod Davis, 1799; Eunice Smalley and Major Studley, 1807;
  • John S. Smalle/Small Jr. and Thankful Eldred, 1800;
  • Joseph Small Jr. and Polly Snow, int. 1799; Joseph Jr. Smalley and Hannah Cochran, 1796;
  • Anthony Smalle/Smalley and Anna Snow, 1810;
  • Benoni Smalley and Lydia Studley, 1799;
  • James Small/Smalley and Elizabeth Baker, 1799]

Barbara's mother, Mercy GODFREY, may have been sister to Mary, Barbara, & Keziah GODFREY. Was her father Jephthah or Uriah GODFREY? I would love to know more about her siblings and her mother's parents!

[From Yarmouth VRs: "Marcy" Godfrey, d/o Uriah and Melitaih Godfrey of Yarmouth, b. 25 Jan 1748/9. Siblings: Sarah, Thankful, Mehetable, Mary, (Marcy), Elisha

From Godfrey Family of Chatham (NEHGR 127:46): Jeptha Godfrey and Bathsheba Eldredge, no list of known children, but probably includes Jeptha, Sarah m. Acus Tripp, Bathsheba m. Nathan Phillips. Page 127:45 says brother Thomas of Chatham bought land on Ragged Neck from heirs of his brouther Jeptha (the deed may be helpful?).]
