Biography

graphic The following is from Carroll County, Virginia: The Early Days to 1920, by Owen Bowman, p. 54 The McFielden Edwards Mill was built by Elisha Edwards, who lived about one-half mile from Mount Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church. He gave the land for the church and cemetery at Mount Lebanon. The mill was located approximately two miles west of the church on Crooked Creek. It was completed on August 2, 1872. On that day, Elisha Edwards ground a bushel of wheat into forty-three pounds of flour. When he became unable to operte the mill, he turned it over to his son, McFielden, who employed Wash Horsley, Thomas Rakes, Bruce Williams and Dock Williams to help with its operation. After McFielden became too old to operate the mill, it began to pass from hand to hand. Later, owners of the mill included Troy Beamer, Phillip Edwards, Garland Edwards, Monroe Rakes (a McFielden son-in-law), Roby Williams, Harold Edwards, Wesley Burcham (another McFielden son-in-law) and Charlie Robinson. A flood partially destroyed the mill in 1940 and a fire in 1941 reduced it to rubble. Photograph by Nada Goad, courtesy of Ruby Sumner. Information from January 10, 1963 Carroll News.
