E T Richey wrote a letter to Mr and Mrs. Hefner, dated August 20, 1887, stating there was an epedemic sickness in the county claiming deaths "too numerous to mention" and that "Little Mattie" has been very sick for 10 weeks. Their complaints raging in epidemic style claiming its victims daily were "chills, fever and congestion, God only knows whos Death will summons his call next, but our main business here is to be Reddy". Little Mattie died about a month later after the date of the letter.
