Overview

Source:Houston, 1882:183 tell us that he was the son of [[Person:Robert Houston (5) by his second wife, Mary Neely, and was born in Logan County, Kentucky, probably about 1800. Robert and Mary eventually joined the Shaker community in Logan County, probably after 1808 [1] While it seems likely Matthew was raised in that community, he did not remain among the Shakers, but married and moved to Leclade County, MO, where he raised several children, including at least one son. Houston 1882 describes him as a very skillful brick and stone mason.

  1. Their youngest daughter was born in 1808, and was buried in the Shaker cemetery. This suggests that they probably joined the community after 1808.
