Matthew Cundall was born in 1854 in Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, North Yorkshire, to parents James Cundall and Ellen Ascough.

Matthew was a farmer.

He married Ann Watson in 1882 in Ripon Registration District. they lived at Smaden Head in Eavestone, North Yorkshire where they had two children, Alice and Robert.

Matthew died at the age of 31 years old, on Friday 18 June 1886 in Lunterstone, Dallowgill leaving Ann a widow. Alice was only 3 years old and Robert would have been around 2..  

He was buried next to his mother on Monday 21 June 1886 in St Peters Church, Dallowgill, North Yorkshire (Plot 9).

His gravestone has the following inscription:

Cundall James 21/07/1896 Age 80 Lunterstone Cundall Ellen 09/09/1876 Age 58 Lunterstone Wife Cundall Matthew 18/06/1886 Age 31 Lunterstone
