Ellen Ascough was born in 1818 in Masham, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. The daughter of Matthew Ascough and Mary Rodwell, she was christened in Masham on Saturday 23 May 1818.

Ellen married James Cundall on Saturday 1 December 1838 in Kirkby Malzeard, North Yorkshire. The witnesses at the marriage were James's brother Thomas Cundall and John Kay.

James and Ellen raised seven children together, four daughters and three sons. Census data has them living at the following locations: 1815 - Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. 1838 - Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. 1841- Graygarth, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. 1842 & 1847 - Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. 1851 - Potter Lane, Laverton, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. 1861 - Lunterstone, Laverton, Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire.

Ellen died when she was 58 years old, on Saturday 9 September 1876 in Lunterstone, leaving James a widower. She was buried on Tuesday 12 September 1876 in St Peters Church, Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, North Yorkshire (Plot 9).

Her gravestone has the following inscription:
