- ↑ Mattie went to St Paul to work at age 14. At 17 she went to Harrison, Idaho where her uncles lived and helped her crippled aunt care for twin baby daughters. (This was Louis Stuve's family). She worked her way thru 8th grade and high school at a church school in Weiser, Idaho. She worked in the kitchen for two years and was chief baker at the school. She became a teacher after graduating. She was highly intelligent, fluent in both Norwegian and English, and had a lovely singing voice.
