OBITUARY

Mason Marzolf Died Suddenly in California

The Nauvoo Independent, Thursday, April 30, 1942

A sudden shock came to this community Thursday morning when word was received that Mason Marzolf had passed away suddenly in Redlands, Calif., late Wednesday, April 22. The body was sent to Nauvoo for burial, arriving at the Anton funeral home Sunday, at 4 p.m.

Mason, son of John and Susan Marzolf, was born March 31, 1903, at Nauvoo, and at his passing was 39 years and 21 days of age. He was baptized in Christ Lutheran church of Nauvoo on June 28, 1903. He attended the grade and high schools at Nauvoo. In 1920, he went to Utah were he worked for a time. From there he went to Detroit, then to Florida. About 1923 he went to California where he established himself as an apiarist. He continued this work until his death, spending part of his time as representative for a Los Angeles Honey Distributors Company. In 1934 he was married to Myrtle Garretson of Redlands.

He is survived by wife; his mother, Mrs. Susan Marzolf of Nauvoo; a brother, Walter of Camp Grant., Ill.; a sister, Virginia Whitlock of Keota, Ia. Preceding him in death was his father; a sister, Fern, and a brother, Raymond.

All who knew Mason remember him as an energetic, kind-hearted young man. His cheerful nature and pleasant manner won him a host of friends.

Burial services were held Monday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. from Christ Lutheran church of Nauvoo, Rev. R. R. Radloff officiating. The church was filled with relatives, friends and acquaintances. Two hymns, “Abide With Me” and “Rock of Ages” were sung by Mrs. M. Baumert and Mrs. A. O. Dachroth, with Miss Rosetta Hertel organist. Paul-bearers were: Edward Reinhardt, Merle Gnann, Karl J. Reinhardt, E. O. Baxter, Edward Marzolf and Charles Matsch. Interment was in the new city cemetery.

Out-of-town friends and relatives attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Prosper Lemoine, Mrs. George Egert of Peoria; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Matsch of Burlington; Mr. Edward Leininger and Mrs. Orpha Symmonds of Warsaw; Dorothy Hertel of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Droe of Hamilton; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Whitlock of Keota, Ia.
