Identity

Her name may have been Mary Laning, as suggested by the fact that the co-executor and witnesses of her husband's will were all men named Laning. See her husband's page for more information.

It has also been speculated that she was Mary Mercer, daughter of Josiah Mercer, but the evidence for that (John Bowlby's father was executor of Josiah Mercer's will) appears to be slim.
