Mary Smith's origins are unknown. Her first confirmed sighting is on 23rd October 1766 at Stotfold in Bedfordshire, when she married a man named William Plummer. He was 24 years old when they married. They were only married for about six weeks before William died, being buried at Stotfold on 8th December 1766.

Mary also appears to have died as a young adult. She only outlived William by just over a year, being buried at Stotfold on 29th March 1768.
