Martin B. Shepard was born in Otsego Co, Feb 3, 1815 and died June 13, 1877. Early in life he came to western NY. He removed from Batavia, Genesee Co, to Wethersfield with his brother, Marvin E. Shepard, in 1837. He was there engaged in farming until his removal to Pike, in 1875 and was known there as a self made man, a prosperous farmer, and an influential citizen. His father, John Shepard, of English descent, was a native of Schoharie Co. [His mother's name was Asenath Marvin.] Mr. Shepard was married in 1840 to Elvira Green, who was born in Attica in 1819. Her father, James Green, lives with her in Pike.

Town of Eagle (page 188) The first church organization in the town was at Eagle Village, and of Free Will Baptist denomination. Among the leading members were Martin and Marvin Shephard.


His twin brother Marvin E. died August 6, 1865 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Pike, Wyoming, NY.

There is a will for Marvin E. Shepard, dated 18 Feb 1884 and amended 9 Jan 1892 in the Wyoming County records. It names wife and executor Persis, nephew and executor Eugene Shepard, daughter Rosette Stuart and grandson Marvin E. Stuart, daughter Ada B. Robinson and granddaughter Cornelia Thompson. Obviously, this will date indicates the death date cited above for Marvin is incorrect.


Martin's will was written in Wethersfield and signed 12 Sep 1868. Elvira is named as his wife and Eugene as his son. Melvina Joiner is his daughter. He named his brother Marvin E. Shepard of Pike as executor.

... to my beloved wife Elvira Shepard all my household goods. bed. bedding and other furniture and also one horse. one buggy and one single harness to be selected by her from articles of the kind owned by me at the time of my decease. .. to my said wife for and during the time of her natural life the possession. use. income. rents. and profits of my homestead farm on which I now reside situated in said town of Wethersfield and containing about two hundred and twenty five acres... I do hereby will and declare that the divises and bequests to my said wife herein contained are by me meant and intended to be in lieu for and satisfaction of all and every right and claim of dower. thirds. or other interest in my property real or personal which she has or by law might have in and to the same.


Eugene M. Shepard, son of Martin and Elvira, was born 1841 and died 1909. His wife Mary L. was born 1844 and died 1913. IEva S. (buried at Pike Cemetery with them) is a daughter of Eugene. She was born 1874 and died in 1875 or 26 April 1879.


Another child of Martin and Elvira's was Marvin C. He died August 6, 1865 at the age of 11 years, 6 months. Eugene was not found in the 1900 census.


Daughter Melvina Joiner was living with Elvira at the time of the 1900 census. Melvina b. 1844 in Pike d. 1923 in Pike A Presbyterian, Aug 1867 in Rochester, m. 1861 in Pike Osgood Church Joiner b. 1837 in Pike d. 1896 in Pike children


Mortimer E. Joiner b. 1862 in Pike Mortimer married Mary Gardner Tuttle 1 Jun 1907 in Manhattan, New York, New York. She was born in Littlton, Massachusetts, daughter of George W. and Atlanta (Sterry) Tuttle Roy S. Joiner b. 1865 Pike M. Kirke Joiner b. 1869 Pike d. 1888 Pike
