Martin Kelly was baptised at Athy in County Kildare on 25th October 1840, one of seven children of a labourer named Dennis Kelly and his wife Bridget (Biddy) Murphy. The family appears to have lived at Cloney, a townland about five miles north of Athy itself.

In 1865, Martin married a Mary Aspell at Monasterevin. They had a son, Patrick, just a few weeks after their marriage. They have yet to be traced after 1865.
