Abstracts from Misc. Delaware Co., OH newspapers 1821-1857: OLENTANGY GAZETTE 1851 December 19 Friday married on the 17th inst. by Rev. Benjamin Olds, Mr. Marion D. Smith to Miss Eliza A. Joy, both of Troy Township

What I remember of my mother telling me is a family story that Marion ran away from home, which was two spinster aunts, and was taken in by a Smith family and he changed his name. After their mother died, "the boys" (Marion and Eliza's sons), discussed going back to the family name (Mom thought it might be DeKalb) but decided if Smith was good enough for their father, it was good enough for them. There was a Revolutionary War hero, Baron Johan de Kalb, but he had only daughters. There are a lot of people of the era with given names Marion DeKalb \endash after Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, hero in the Carolinas, and de Kalb who came over from France like Lafayette.
