When as a young girl and living with her parents in Philadelphia, Maria witnessed General George Washington passing through Princeton, New Jersey on his way to be inaugurated as the first President of the United States. She was also present with her parents at the first inaugural ball at Philadelphia. She shook hands with General Lafayette when he was on his last visit to the United States. In the year 1820, John George and Maria Beuter removed their family to Liberty Township, Tioga County, PA.
