Facts and Events
Maria Reid was born in about 1822 in Ireland, daughter of Mary Dennan or Denning and her husband Michael Reid, a mason. No baptism has been found for Maria, but shortly after her birth the family was living at Monasterevin in County Kildare, where the Catholic parish registers only began in 1819 and the first couple of years are badly faded to the point of complete illegibility. It is therefore possible that Maria's baptism either predates the registers there or was one of the entries which are now illegible. Maria's parents continued having children baptised at Monasterevin until 1842. Several of Maria's family emigrated to New York in the 1850s. Her brothers Joseph and Michael and her sister Theresa appear to have each emigrated individually through the first half of that decade. Around 1854, Maria followed, along with her mother and siblings Ann, Agnes and Patrick. The 1855 census finds the family living in New York City. Not all of Maria's siblings emigrated; at least her brother John and sister Ellen stayed behind in Ireland. The 1855 census also describes Maria's mother as a widow; it seems likely that her father Michael had died in Ireland between about 1842 and 1854, but no records were kept of deaths or burials in Monasterevin at that time. Maria has yet to be traced after 1855. References
