Tradition has that Maggie and her siblings were raised by a Negro mammy after their mother died.

1933 May 28: P. R. Elmore Is Honored at Party

 Mrs. P[orter]. R[owland]. Elmore was hostess with a surprise birthday party in honor of Mr. Elmore at their home, 2005 Filmore Street.
 The entertaining rooms were attractively decorated with pink and white roses with the same colors featured in the appointments of the refreshment course.
 Games of bridge were introduced for entertainment with high scores going to Mrs. Floyd Hillin and Mr. Elmore, and consolation prizes to Mrs. Ray Roth and John Gray.  Galloping prizes went to Mrs. W. E. Laughter.
 Guests included Mesdames Ray Roth, Ivy Wilkinson [Kate], W. E. Laughter, Eva Peake, M. E. Wilkinson [Porter's grandmother]; Messrs. "Mrs. WILKINSON Died Here Friday; Buried At Moreland Sunday / Mrs. Margaret WILKINSON died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elbert DUNN in Rocky on Friday, December 22,* at the age of 79. Heart trouble and asthma were given as the cause of her demise. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Moreland by Rev. Kattiner on Sunday, after which she was interred in the cemetery there. / Mrs. WILKINSON had been living in the DUNN home about six weeks. She had been ill for about three weeks but was thought to be improving just before her death which came suddenly. / She is survived by Mrs. DUNN and three other children-- Gid WILKINSON of Moreland, Iva [sic] WILKINSON of Amarillo, Texas, and Mrs. Howard ELMORE of Black, Texas. / A sincere feeling of sympathy is extended to those left to mourn her passing by the people of this community."

  • The record I inherited has that Maggie d. in 1933, age 79, but her gravestone reportedly has 1934. In 1933, Dec. 21st fell on a Thurs., and on a Fri. in 1934.
