GID appears to have been named after his paternal great-grandfather's (Moses') brother, Gideon (1772-1842), and his maternal great-grandfather, Halbert GOODE (d. 1834-35), son of Charles B. GOODE and Elizabeth HALBERT (md. 1796). Moses had another great-grandson, Thomas Gideon WILKINSON (1863-1940), son of Obediah, and grandson of Aaron.

Homestead Proof -- Testimony of Claimant. GIDEON WILKINSON, being called as a witness in his own behalf in support of homestead entry, No. 2361, for S2 SW4 Section 3 and N2 NW4 Section 10, Twp. 22N, Range 17W, testifies as follows: Ques. 1--What is your name, age, and post-office address? Ans. GIDEON WILKINSON, age 26, post office Quinlan O.T. Ques. 2--Are you a native-born citizen of the United States, and if so, in what State or Territory were you born?* Ans. A native born citizen of the U.S. born in Texas Ques. 3--Are you the identical person who made homestead entry, No. 2361, at the Woodward O.T. land office on the 26th day of July, 1898, and what is the true description of the land now claimed by you? Ans. I am. Grazing land, broken by creek and canyons Ques. 4--When was your house built on the land and when did you establish actual residence therein? (Describe said house and other improvements which you have placed on the land, giving total value thereof.) Ans. About the first of January 1899, and established residence at same time. Log house 14 x 18. 3 pole corrals, well [?], place fenced with 3-wires and from 30 to 100 head of stock grazed Value $500 Ques. 5--Of whom does your family consist; and have you and your family resided continuously on the land since first establishing residence thereon? (If unmarried, state the fact.) Ans. myself, am a single person Ques. 6--For what period or periods have you been absent from the homestead since making settlement, and for what purpose; and if temporarily absent, did your family reside upon and cultivate the land during such absence? Ans. Never been absent only for a day or two at a time. Ques. 7--How much of the land have you cultivated each season, and for how many seasons have you raised crops thereon? Ans. About 5 acres 1899. 15 acres ever since, raised crop 5 years. Ques. 8--Is your present claim within the limits of an incorporated town or selected site of a city or town, or sued in any way for trade and business? Ans. No sir Ques. 9--What is the character of the land? Is it timber, mountainous, prairie, grazing, or ordinary agricultural land? State its kind and quality, and for what purpose it is most valuable. Ans. Grazing land, very rough, most valuable for grazing. Ques. 10--Are there any indications of coal, salines, or minerals of any kind on the land? (If so, describe what they are, and state whether the land is more valuable for agricultural than for mineral purposes.) Ans. There are not Ques. 11--Have you ever made any other homestead entry? (If so, describe the same.) Ans. No sir. Ques. 12--Have you sold, conveyed, or mortgaged any portion of the land; and if so, to whom and for what purpose? Ans. No sir Ques. 13--Have you any personal property of any kind elsewhere than on this claim? (If so, describe the same, and state where the same is kept.) Ans. I have not. Ques. 14--Describe by legal subdivisions, or by number, kind of entry, and office where made, any other entry or filing (not mineral), made by you since August 30, 1890. Ans. Final Affidavit Required of Homestead Claimants. I, GIDEON WILKINSON, having made a Homestead entry of the S2 SW4 Section 3 and N2 NW4 Section 10, Twp. 22N, Range 17W, subject to entry at Woodward O.T. under section No. 2289 of the Revised Statutes of the United States, do now apply to perfect my claim thereto by virtue of the Revised Statues of the United States; and for that purpose do solemnly swear that I am a citizen of the United States; that I have made actual settlement upon and have cultivated and resided upon said land since the 10 day of January, 1899, to the present time; that no part of said land has been alienated, except as provided in section 2288 of the Revised Statues, but that I am the sole bona fide owner as an actual settler; that I will bear true allegiance to the Government of the United States; and, further, that I have not heretofore perfected or abandoned an entry made under the homestead laws of the United States. (Sign plainly with full christian name.) Gideon Wilkinson I, W.B. 1900 Woodward Co., OK Terr., census, p.189A, Webster Twp., (part of) all east of range 19, June 6-7, 1900, Eli Roberts: 86/88, GID WILKINSON, head, W M, June 1877, 22, single, TX IA AR, farmer, unemployed 0 months, owns farm free of mortgage. [Enumerated immediately following his mother and siblings.]

GID's land was sold for taxes Nov. 16, 1903, "by the County Treasurer of said County, to Woodward County and assigned to L.A. Wight for the sum of Twenty and 53/100 Dollars, for Delinquent Taxes for the year 1902, has this day [Aug. 1, 1905] been redeemed by GID WILKINSON." He had to pay $27.10 tax and interest for 1902, $20.65 tax and interest for 1903, and 50¢ for the Redemption Certificate before getting his land back. During the interim, he had md. July 3, 1904.

  • This census is our only knowledge that Gid and Myrtle lost a child; my mother, and likely her siblings, apparently never knew this; otherwise this child would have been included on Gid and Myrtle's family sheet I inherited along with its sex and dates; and note, too, that there is indeed a space between Opal in 1906 and Peggy in 1910.

1936. GID and his wife, their youngest son, and their third daughter were among the many Oklahomans who fled the Dust Bowl for the west coast and the State of Oregon.

Gid and Myrtle are buried in the Hermiston, OR, Cemetery.
