From Bob Mitchell: "Doc was a farmer off and on during his life. During the time he and Martha Elizabeth lived in Texas with the Stewart family, he worked building the railroad. After leaving Texas, on the run from the law, he returned to Tennessee and began farming again. (See notes on Leonard Ralph Stewart below) He was doing well until his brother, Millard, showed him a better way to make the mortgage payment by making and selling moonshine whiskey. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution was passed in 1920 and created a ready market for moonshine whiskey. (See notes on Millard Filmore Jackson) Doc was pursued by the "Revenuers" and eventually caught and incarcerated for 9 months. During this time, he lost his farm and when released started share-cropping. He share-cropped in Madison County until his age prevented the hard work. At around 70 he started selling 'Patent Medicines' living up to his name of "Doc." Doc and Martha Elizabeth were divorced in 1932 when he married Hattie. Hattie and Doc divorced after having two children. He then married Lela Moore shortly before his death in September of 1953."

The Leonard Ralph Stewart story from June Johnson: "Tennessee Stewart `Tennie` became pregnant and blamed Doc who was married to her older sister Martha Elizabeth. Her father, James Franklin Stewart promptly had Doc charged with rape and jailed since Tennie was under-age at the time. Martha Elizabeth sided with her husband and blamed Tennie for her situation.
