  3. Source:Chapin, Gilbert Warren. Chapin Book of Genealogical Data, with Brief Biographical Sketches, of the Descendants of Deacon Samuel Chapin, p. 293, after giving the above dates for Luther, attaches a ridiculous footnote, "Luther had a son Luther, or Ware." Clearly a man who died at the age of 7 had no son, so either this footnote is applied to the wrong person, or the death date is. But the death record seems to leave little room for misapplication. Source:Wall, Caleb A. Reminiscences of Worcester from the Earliest Period, Historical and Genealogical, p. 338, says this Luther had a son Luther Chapin, Jr., now of Ware, father of Charles S. Chapin of Worcester (published in 1877). The 1886 marriage of Charles S. Chapin lists his birth as 1841 in Enfield, MA, to Luther and Hannah Chapin. Luther Chapin m. 1831 in Enfield Hannah Conkey (p. 7). His age in the 1840 census in Enfield is consistent with a Luther Chapin who died in Ware in 1882 #107, birth about 25 Oct 1805 in Shutesbury to Luther and Mary. This same Luther of Ware appears to be the one named as executor in the will of another Luther Chapin, proved in 1864, and was buried in Ware (Find A Grave). That last Luther (the grandfather) was not this Luther, but s/o Stephen Chapin of Milford, b. 1777. See Vol. 1, p. 1138 of the Chapin book, which describes the correct grandfather (apparent editing error listing his wife's 1862 death date as his), and his son Luther shown on Vol. 2, p. 1709 with a death in Ware, and listed as father of Charles Stoddard Chapin. Thus, the son of Thaddeus did not have a son Luther of Ware, and there is no evidence that it was not him that died in 1790.
