After high school, she attended Ward Belmont College for a year. She studied at Louisville Conservatory of Music and taught music for twenty years. When her husband, George, played the organ at various Methodist churches in Mayfield and Hopkinsville, Kentucky, she directed the choirs. An active musician and community leader all her life, she directed on the first choirs to broadcast over radio and was governor of the Womens' Clubs in Kentucky's Second District.
