Luke Ward was born on 27th February 1817 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter. The family had Baptist leanings; Luke's maternal grandfather, John Allam, was a deacon at the Baptist chapel in the neighbouring village of Heckington. Young Luke was not baptised as an infant, being instead baptised as an adult on the same day as several of his siblings in 1847.
Luke's maternal grandfather died in 1841, leaving a Luke and his brother Edward a house and associated carpenter's workship, barn and other premises at Great Hale. The 1841 census later that year finds Luke living with his parents and siblings on South Street in Great Hale, and working as a carpenter. Luke's father died in 1844.
On 29th August 1850 Luke was married at the nearby village of South Kyme to Mary Holmes. They returned to Great Hale after their marriage, having four children there between 1850 and 1857. The 1851 census finds Luke and Mary living on South Street in Great Hale with their daughter, Luke's mother, one of his sisters, a niece, a nephew, a lodger and an apprentice. Luke was described as a master carpenter employing one man and one boy at this time.
Luke's mother died in 1857.
The 1861 census finds Luke, Mary and their four children living at 14 South Street in Great Hale with one servant. By this time Luke was described as a farmer of ten acres rather than a carpenter.
Luke's son Christopher died in 1869, aged 16.
The 1871 census finds Luke, Mary and their three surviving children living at an unspecified location in Great Hale. Their farm had grown to 25 acres.
Mary died at Great Hale on 17th May 1873, aged 51. Luke survived her by nearly nineteen years. His daughter Ann died in 1874 aged 24, and his son Luke died in 1887, aged 30, leaving a widow and several young children. Luke therefore outlived three of his four children.
Newspaper advertisements from the 1880s and early 1890s show Luke advertising for a housekeeper who would also be able to look after a dairy. He also placed a notice in the Stamford Mercury in 1885 bluntly advising readers that "all cats and dogs found straying on land belonging to Luke Ward, Great Hale, will be shot".
The 1891 census finds Luke living at Great Hale with his only surviving son Benjamin, along with a housekeeper and a farm servant.
Luke died at Great Hale on 4th March 1892, aged 75.
