Luke farmed in Marion County, TN until 1830 at which time he took his family to Arkansas. Arkansas as a part of the Louisiana Purchase (1803) had become a territory and low priced land was available. He decided to join some cousins who had gone to northwest Arkansas earlier. He outfitted an ox-wagon and headed for Arkansas with his wife and four children.

When Luke was 65 years of age, he decided to join with a wagon train and migrate to the Oregon Territory. He settled in Lane County, Oregon where he lived the rest of his life.
