Carriage painter, aged 24, born at St Austell. 1939 - Obituary, (source unknown): "Callington Councillor Dies. Mr. L. H. Tucker's Many Public Activities "Callington has lost a well known and familiar figure through the death of Louis Henry Tucker, after a short illness, on Monday, the 63rd anniversary of his birthday. "A native of Bodmin, Mr Tucker has resided in Callington for nearly 40 years, business as a painter and sign writer, a family calling which began in 1810, when his great-grandfather, Mr Thomas Tucker, set up a similar business in Truro. For over a century without a break of four generations of the family wrote signs for Cornish folk and deceased at an early age, recalled decorating the Judge's coach for the Grand Assize at Bodmin. "Whilst residing at Callington Mr Tucker had been associated with various organisations and had played an active and useful part in local affairs. He was a member of the Parish Council, British Legion and "Ye olde Dupath" Lodge of Buffaloes, and for the past 20 years had been secretary of court "Royal Cornish" No 3600 A. O. F. He was energetic and successful secretary of the Callington Carnival Committee and in addition to other activities was at one time chief officer of the fire brigade and a member of the male voice choir. "His wife predeceased him 11 years ago and a grown up family is left to mourn their loss. "Foresters acted as bearers at the funeral yesterday when the parish council was represented by Messrs J. H. B. Harris chairman; F. R. John, G. Ryder, H. J. Holloway, and T. H. Edgecombewho is also secretary of the British Legion Branch. The general attendance included: Messrs James Jago (secretary Star of the East Rechabite Tent), J. Martin (treasurer Callington British Legion), A. Giles, W. Martin, E. Pearce, W. Dustan and J. Higman. "The service was conducted by the rector (Rev R. W. Marsh) and the foresters' funeral oration was read by Mr. E. J. Hicks, sprigs of evergreen being dropped into the grave. Mourners: Messers Jack Leonard and William Tucker, sons. Miss Dorothy Tucker, Mrs Jessina Williams daughter. Mesdames L. and W. Tucker daughters-in-law, Mr and Mrs Martin (Bigbury), Mrs W. May (Kelly Bray). Mrs J. Griffiths daughter was unable to attend owing to indisposition." |
