LEWIS THROCKMORTON [LBS, 7, 12-16; CWT, 225-6] was born 9 Feb. 1745/6 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., N.J. and baptized 9 Feb. 1746 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury, and married RACHEL DEMOSS 1766-1770 near Deer Creek, Garrett Co., Md., and died ca. 1799 in Hampshire Co., Va. According to LBS (pp. 7 ).

Rachel was a daughter of William & Rachel (Winchell) Demoss of Deer Creek. She was born ca. 1747 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., N.J., died ca. 1798 in Hampshire Co., Va.

Lewis was a farmer. He was mentioned in Sarah (Throckmorton) Nichols’ 1755 will.

Lewis Throckmorton of Hampshire Co., Va. was listed as a Revolutionary War non-military patriot by Anne Waller Reddy in The Heritage Encyclopedia, Vol 21 (edited and published by Jim Comstock, Richwood, W. Va.

On 22 Jan. 1777 Lewis Throckmorton witnessed a deed in which his wife’s parents, William & Rachel Demoss, leased and released to Jonah Leaman of Berkeley Co., Va., 120 acres of Great Cacapon. The deed was recorded 12 May 1778.161 In the 1782 tax list for Hampshire Co., Va., Lewis Throgmorton was head of a household of 10 whites and 0 blacks.162 In 1784 he was head of a household of 10 whites, 1 dwelling and 1 other building.163

Evidently in preparation for their planned removal to Ohio they made the following sales: • 14 Sep. 1795: 37½ acres in Hampshire Co. to Thomas Flora of Hampshire Co. Witnesses: Jacob Flora [see ¶iii. below], Jacob Chrisman & Mary Chrisman, • 16 Sep. 1797: 37½ acres on the Potomac River to Robert Rogers of Hampshire Co. Witness: Andrew Woodrow, • 18 Sep. 1797: 361 acres near the Potomac River to Charles Bevin of Hampshire Co. Witness: Andrew Woodrow, but Lewis’ death prevented their move west. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bart/ F-74. Lewis Throckmorton of Hampshire County, Va. 52. LEWIS THROCKMORTON, b. Freehold, N. J. abt 1745/6; bp. Christ Church, Shrewsbury, 9 Feb 1746; mentioned in the wills of Sarah Nichols and Thomas Throckmorton. Went to Virginia abt the time of the Revolutionary War. Name of wife uncertain, but there is a family tradition that, "he m. a French lady named Dumas (Demoss)." In 1782 he was listed in the Census as a resident of Hampshire Co., Va., having 10 whites and no blacks in his household; again in 1784, listed in same county with 10 whites, one dwelling and one other building (not a barn or shed). The names of some of his children are in doubt. As we have but two sources of knowledge in establishing the fact of one's ancestry; record and tradition, and the first is wholly lacking in this case, and the second hesitated over by the two aged descendants (both b. 1834) who subitted the lists in 1915, it is thought best to give both.

Lewis I born 1743-4 in Freehold, NJ. Died in Hampshire Co, VA in 1798. He married Rachel Demoss to Hampshire Co., VA about the time of the Revolution. In 1782 he was listed in the census as "Heads of Families" having ten whites, no blacks in his family. In1784 he was again listed, 10 whites, one dwelling and another building on his land. He served as a private from VA in the Revolution. We do not as yet have his service record, but as several descendants are members of the D.A.R. and he is listed by them on page 550 Sept. 1930 D.A.R magazine. He was named in a list of those to whom warrants were issued. Lewis I and Rachel owned large tracts of land on the south branch of the Potomac river and on the Cacapeon River also. The lists will be given here later. He sold all of it by 1797-seemingly in preparation to go to Ohio. But his death prevented that. We do not know the place of residence or burial as inquiries reveal that the records were destroyed in the Civil War. Wm. DeMoss, Lewis DeMoss, Jno. DeMoss and several of that family also owned large tracts of land here.
