History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 381. Section on Lyme Township. "Mr. (Levi) SUTTON built a saw mill on Frink run soon after his settlement. This was the first saw mill in the township, or for some miles around." Page 389. Section on Lyme Township. Death: Deathdate given as 1 Oct 1852 in will of Levi Sutton from Huron County Probate Records. Photocopy in possession of Anita C. Andrews. Other source: Williams History of Huron and Erie Counties, p. 381. "The first settlement at Hunt's Corners was made in the SE part by several families named Sutton & the locality has since been known as the Sutton settlement or Hunt's Corners." This source gave 5 October 1852 as death date. In 1812 he & brother Moses went to army. In 1814 purchased in Lyme & erected house on Lot #5, had a sawmill.

Ohio Pub. A., vol. 2, p. 9 "Memoirs of Townships- Lyme" "In the spring of 1815, a beginning was made in the first settlement in what is still called the 'Sutton Settlements' by several families of that name. They have passed through many checkered scenes, and are deceased. Some of their children yet live in Lyme and Sherman. . . . The first sawmill was built by Levi Sutton in the south part of the township, on a creek bearing his name. . . A Baptist church was organized in the Sutton Settlement, about 1825. Subsequently, the members united with the Baptist Church in Monroeville." Levi's family (without Levi--apparently he was in Prison in counterfeiting charge--are shown in 1840 Census. Catherine Sutton is shown as head of house. Slave holders in 1820&1830

Jan. 4, 1815; Daniel, Oct. 8, 1817; Elisha B., b. June 20, 1819 [d. Dec 27, 1879]; Philip, Oct 10, 1820; Alfred, b. Sept. 1, 1822; Clarissa b. Oct. 29, 1825; Sarah Ann, b. Feb. 18, 1827; Andrew Jackson, Jan. 6, 1829; Ira, b. Mar. 7, 1831; Levi, b. Marrch 9, 1833; Cynthia Ann, b. March 28, 1838.
