Leonard Starnes (Staring, Starns, Stearns, etc.) was born circa 1726, a son of Frederick Starns (c.1700-1774/5) and his wife Mary Goldman. He was born in the German Flats section of NY (now the present site of the town of Herkimer, NY), and his family moved to the Juniata River in PA around 1740, and to southwest Virginia around 1743/4.

Leonard may have moved to Cecil Co., Maryland in the 1750s, he moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina around 1767, but returned to Washington County, Virginia by about 1774, and died there circa 1782.

Leonard had at least two sons, perhaps more. The children I have tentatively assigned to him are:

    1. John Starnes (c.1752-1833), proved his eldest son by a 1782 deed.

    2. Nicholas Starnes (1756-1835), served as a Sgt. in the Rev. War. Was in Roane Co., TN by 1805, Rhea Co., TN in 1816, moved to Blount Co., AL around 1821. Married Barbara Winters in 1816.

    3. Anna Starnes (1760-1819) m. John Boone. Lived & died near Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC. Not defintiely known to be a daughter of Leonard. She may have been a daughter of his brother Joseph.
