The given names of her Border Scots parents are not known. She had an elder sister Charlotte.

Laura's parents sailed for Australia in the early days of the Ballarat gold rushes (1851 to 1857), and no more trace of them has been found. Laura and Charlotte meanwhile were left in the care of their uncle Robert Woodward, who lived in London with estates in the West Country. (Four Founding Families)
