  19. This was verified by my grandmother, Carrie Vesta Stuve, who told me that in Norway the family's surname was Halden.
  20. His origins are described in Louis Stuve's letter: (which also hints at a Lunde connection, but I haven't found such a connection yet). "The starting point is Lunde, the big farm in the Elre River valley a few miles upstream from Oibakken [Øybbakken] and Eemoen [Øymoen]. But if we put two and two together we find that several of the members of the Lunde family settled at Larskogen an upland community on th hi-land facing upstream from the main river valley of Etna. Grandpa [Lars Hovelsen Stuve] had the farm Neregarden at Larskogen [Nerøydegarden at Lierskogen]." [The bracketed sections are my additions to show the difference in the place names in the letter compared to how they appear in the bygdebok].
  21. according to the 1801 Norwegian Census.
  22. The farm was called "Halden" in olden days and was never a cotter farm but became established as a small farm once a part of the larger farm, Stuve. The name "Halla" means "hellinga" which translated from Norwegian means "leaning, tilting, or inclining."
