Facts and Events
Name Sarah Katherine Carter
Alt Name Kate _____
Gender Female
Birth[1][2] 28 Jan 1870 West Virginia, United States
Marriage Abt 1897 to John Adam Goddard
Death[1] 29 Mar 1928 McKendree, Fayette, West Virginia, United States

Grandma told me two different things: First, about 1998 or 1999 she said that John Adam Goddard's second wife was Kate Carter. In 2004, I discovered a copy of James H. Wright and Mamie A. Goddard's marriage certificate in a family bible. The witnesses to their marriage were Martha Kincaid, whom Grandma noted was married to Marshall Kincaid, the brother of Kate Kincaid. She said that it is likely that Martha and Marshall Kincaid were the parents of Ray who was adopted and raised by Granny and James H. Wright. Grandma clearly stated that Kate was a Kincaid when she married John Adam Goddard.

The 1920 Census appears to solve this discrepency: On the 1920 Census, Fayette County, Quinnimont District, Precincts 4 & 5, Enumeration District 40, Red Springs Road, Katie Goddard age 40 (She lied about her age and should have been listed as 50 years old), is the head of the household:

  • Goddard, Katie, Head, age 40, widow
  • Marine, 21
  • Roy, 19
  • Jesse, 17
  • Dorse, 15
  • Ila, 13
  • Thelma, 12
  • Russell, 10
  • Carter, Marion, Brother, age 52, Lumber Cutter for Labor Co.

It appears as though Katie and family share a house with S. G. Claypool age 53 and his wife, Virginia age 53, and their children Edgar 25 and Clara 18.
