Mentions brother Elnathan, wife Deborah, sons Josiah, John, Zerobabel, Ephraim and unnamed daughters. A note identifies John as a son "of Captain Thomas Topping, lived at Soggaponack, in Southampton" and quotes his epitaph: "Here lieth the body of John Topping, Justice of the Peace, aged 50 years, who departed this life on the 29th day of May in the year 1686". In 1697 Josiah Topping was chosen to survey highways in Suffolk Co, NY. "New England Marriages Before 1700" Clarence A. Torrey, Baltimore, MD, 1985 (as found on NEHGS CD-ROM, Boston, 2001) "TOPPING, Josiah (1663-1726) & Hannah [SAYRE]; Southampton, LI" Capt. Josiah Topping (b. 1663; d. 1726) lived in his father's house next to Robert Norris, John's father. He was married to Hannah Sayre, daughter of Daniel Sayre (d. 1707). Their children were Josiah Jr. (d. 1747) and John (b. 1706) and probably some daughters, one of whom could have married John Norris. On 10 Sep 1729, Josiah Topping (Jr.) was the first witness listed on the will of Robert Norris. He was a deacon in the church at Southampton. On 20 Mar 1731, Josiah Topping (Jr.) and John Norris were witnesses to the sale of land in Southampton by Daniel Sayre (Jr.) to Josiah Pierson. Additionally, John's son John Norris Jr. witnessed the will of Daniel Topping in 1787. |
