Note iii says that Joseph appears to belong to the family of Jean because his age on the 1777 census matches that of son Joseph, and it is plausible that he would married into the same family as his brother Jean-Baptiste.

On the THERIOT surname: "The earliest to arrive [in LA] were two Theriot families, who by 1766 had settled along the Mississippi River in the first Acadian Coast (St. James Parish)....the other was headed by ...another Joseph TERRIOT and his wife, Madeleine Bourgeois."
In footnotes on p. 191: "The blood relationship between the two early Theriot families in Louisiana is not clear, but the Joseph Terriot (b. 1732) who married ca. 1758 Madeleine Bourgeois apparently was the son of a Jean Terriot (m. Madeleine Bourg), Jean being a second cousin of the Joseph (b. 1699) who married Francoise Melancon in 1725."

On 5 Oct 1761 on list of French prisoners at Fort Edward, two Joseph TERRIAUs listed. The first was 18th in a list of 83 families, with 4 members in his family. [This is most likely our man. The second Joseph was listed 68th with 6 in his family, just before families of Alexis, Etienne and Jaques TERRIAU [presumably brothers, sons of Joseph THERIOT & Francoise MELANSON].

  8. Société historique acadienne, La
    cahier 24 (1969), pp. 158-164.

On 12 Jul 1762, ten months after the first census at Fort Edward, most Acadian men had been sent to Halifax, only the sick remained with their women and children at Fort Edward. Among them was a Jos'h TERRIAU, with 6 members of his family. Of those families living there without their men was one of Jos. TERRIAU, with 3 in family. [This is most likely our man.] Listed just before him was René TERRIAU, with 9 members in the family.
Less than a month later, on 9 Aug 1762, these same TERRIAU families are listed as being fed at Fort Edward, with all of the men absent except the Joseph TERRIAU, with 6 in famly (only 4 1/3 victualled). The other Joseph (absent) [probably this man] has 3 in family (with 2 victualled).
By 11 Oct 1762, no THERIOT families are listed among the 74 famlies at Fort Edward. [Have they been moved to Halifax?]
