On p. 173: "Not all...are obvious nicknames." He gives several examples, including one man who "had been know as 'Bobby' for so long that even his mother had to be reminded of his real name...
Nicknames are in such general use that they are included in the Breaux Bridge telephone directory... included at first because there were many similar names and because the legal names were often unknown even to close friends.
A survey conducted among two classes...at The University of Southwestern Louisiana...turned up a large number of nicknames. Most of the people surveyed had nicknames and were able to list many more. Often they did not know the legal name of the individual, and often they could not give the origin of their own nickname. These nicknames tended to fall into broad categegories [sic]: some are shortened versions of legal names."
