The 1855 election presaged "... the wholesale postbellum migration of the Acadian gentry into the Anglo-American mainstream. This flight across cultural lines would be undertaken in response to the vitriolic public denigration of their mother culture."

Also was on the rolls of Co. H, Cons.[olidated] Cres.[cent] Regt. in 1864 (the only Roll on file). LA Inf. (This appears on his tombstone.) He enrolled at St. Mary, LA on Sept. 1, 186-. Was captured at Fort De Russey 14 Mar 1864, sent to Baton Rouge 17 Mar 1864, received in New Orleans 20 Mar 1864, transferred from there to be exchanged at Red River Landing on 22 Jul 1864. On the Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War.

!MILITARY: At Fort De Russy, Union detachments of 16th and 17th Corps fought, assisted by Porter's Miss. Squadron. On Union side: 7 killed, 41 wounded. Confederate: 5 killed, 4 wounded, 260 prisoners.

The town had two "sash and blind factories." There were 3 hotels, 3 public schools, one high school, and two weekly newspapers. There were electric lights and a telephone exchange. [Perhaps they did not have a telephone?]

    [Next door is a MD-born William M. AGER, occupation "Keeping Coffee house." Did he take this over from Austin since the 1860 census? Eight households earlier, in the town of Pattersonville, is Austin's mother with her younger 2nd husband who listed as a Carpenter.]
