    Joseph Surber, Sr. was the son of Hans Heinrich "Henry" Surber (born 1718/1719 Zurich, Switzerland and died before 1755 Frederick Co., VA) and Barbara. Joseph had the following siblings: John born about 1739 and married Magdalena Zorn; Barbara 1740-1774 and married Steven Shuman; Randolph or Rudolph born 1742 and married Margaret; Jacob 1744-1839, married Catherine Haller and died in Highland Co., OH; Henry born about 1746, married Rosina, and died 1778 Shenandoah Co., VA; and Adam born 1751, married Margaret "Peggy" in 1775, married Mary Shields in 1822, and died in Pulaski Co., KY. All the children of Hans and Barbara were born in Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA with the possible exception of John.

    Joseph Surber, Sr. served in the Revolutionary War and married Margaret Elizabeth Coursey after April 10, 1778 in Orange Co., VA. Their children included:
