Enlistment records show Joseph enlisting as a Private on 19 November 1861 and then mustering in to Company F, 14th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 10 December 1861. The 14th fought in engagements in, and around, Lawrence County before it had even fully been mustered. After the Battle of Middle Creek on January 10, 1862 the 14th occupied Prestonburg in Floyd County. On January 14 they established winter quarters in Paintsville, Kentucky. Disease soon is rampant due to the incessant rain, inadequate quarters and sometimes shortage of food. Hundreds of men have measles, typhoid fever, camp fever, etc. and many die. This is probably how Joseph died as well as his brother Milton 7 days later.
