Joseph Shearman was baptised on 29th December 1844 at Anwick in Lincolnshire, son of Mary Ann Shearman, formerly Taylor, and her husband Joseph Shearman, an agricultural labourer. When Joseph was still quite young the family moved to the neighbouring village of Ruskington, where his younger brother was born in 1849 and where the family was living at the time of the 1851 census.
By 1861 Joseph was working as a farm servant in the nearby village of Ashby de la Launde. In 1871 he was living at another local village, Temple Bruer, and still working as a farm servant. One of the other servants at the farm in Temple Bruer was Elizabeth Ann Priestley. The following year, Joseph and Elizabeth were married.
Shortly after their marriage, Joseph and Elizabeth left Lincolnshire and moved over 60 miles north-west to Yorkshire, where they had two children in 1873 and 1875 at the hamlet of Haigh in the parish of Kexbrough, just north of Barnsley. By 1877 they had moved about four miles further north to Durkar in the parish of Crigglestone, just south of Wakefield. At Durkar, Joseph and Elizabeth went on to have a further nine children between 1877 and 1895.
Each census from 1881 to 1911 finds the family living at Durkar. Joseph worked as a farm labourer there, being described on one occasion as a teamster, indicating that he drove a team of animals (probably horses) pulling carts. In 1911 it was reported that ten of Joseph and Elizabeth's eleven children were still living.
Joseph died in 1915, aged 70. Elizabeth survived him by about just over eight years.
