    [summary of article]

Joseph Mattox had been mustered out of the Union Army and arrived at the train station in San Pierre, Indiana. Several people recognized and spoke to him. He started walking for home, but never arrived. Several years later some children were playing around an old abandoned house and found some human bones The house was on the road that Joseph Mattox had taken home. It has always been speculated that these bones were of Joseph Mattox and that he had been murdered by highway men for his mustering out pay.

This story also was handed down in the family.
