WAS IN QUANTRELL'D RAID.
Joseph B. Mater, a Kansas Pioneer, Is Dead at 86.
Joseph B. Mater, 86 years old, one of the few survivors of the Quantrell raid on Lawrence, died last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna Ricker, 652 Shawnee Avenue, Kansas side.
Mr. Mater came to Kansas from Illinois in 1850, settling near Shawnee Mission. He was one of the first settlers of Johnson County, which was then partly occupied by Shawnee Indians. Later the family moved to Lawrence, Kas.
The day of the Quantrell raid, Mr. Mater and a brother, now dead, escaped through the strategy of his wife, Elizabeth Mater, who rolled them up in a rag carpet. The raiders, after searching the house, set it on fire, but did not interfere with Mrs. Mater when she rolled out the carpets.
After the raid Mr. Mater returned to Shawnee, and twenty years ago moved to Kansas City. His wife died last April. By vocation Mr. Mater was a carpenter and machinist.
He is survived by one brother, Silas Mater; three daughters, Mrs. Edna Ricker, Mrs. George Williamson and Mrs. William Smith of the Kansas side, and one son, Edward Mater of the Kansas side. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Ricker. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery.

- ↑ Both his death record and his obituary claim he is buried in Shawnee Cemetery, but the cemetery office indicates he is not buried there, therefore, it can only be assumed that it was a cemetery IN Shawnee and as his brother's family is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, it's a reasonable guess that is where he is also.
