Although the paper trail does not show it, JOSEPH probably traveled to the two locations in Virginia, where his father took most of the family (and other relatives) in circa 1788. He does show up in Preble County, Ohio records, where there is a lot of documentation.

Below is an image of a 1876 map of Washington Township, Wayne County, Indiana (just across the state line from Preble Co.). At the bottom of the page, is an image of a church, which was probably "Lower's Chapel". Just north of it is a tiny "+" which probably represents the Valley Grove Cemetery. Both are in Section 19. We have documentation that Joseph's property was west of the Whitewater River, as shown on the map. Also shown on the map is the Whitewater Canal, which is no longer visible in this area.

At the top of the map and out of the township, are some local communities. Running through them is the famous "National Road" (later US 40). Note to the left of the map, the marking of Fayette County, where his brother Jacob lived. The brother's farms were probably not far apart (see Jacob's WeRelate page). Joseph may have also lived in Posey Township, Fayette County, Indiana?

He obtained Land Patents in Madison Co., but it does not seem he lived there.

He is buried with a group of (8 or more) of his relatives in Wayne County.

The book lists a Lieutenant Joseph Lower who was in the War of 1812. Could this have been the same Joseph? Everything matches up, except there has been no PROOF found yet!

Baptized at HAIN'S CHURCH in Berks County, Pennsylvania, which is a famous church in the area, officially known as St. John's Dutch Reformed. His sponsors were John & Rosina Yost (Jost).
