Joseph Hendrie Grant was born on 11th May 1859 in Baghdad, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He was the son of Charles and Theresa Grant. Nothing is known about Joseph's mother apart from her first name. His father Charles was originally from England and appears to have gone to sea as a sailor in the 1840s. It is not known how he came to be in Baghdad.
It appears that Joseph and his father Charles moved to England some time during the 1860s, returning to live in the little village of Sidlesham where Charles was from, and where Joseph's grandfather and step-grandmother were still living. Joseph was baptised at Sidlesham in 1867, by which time he was about nine years old.
Joseph's father died in 1868. Less than two years later his grandfather died too. The 1871 census finds Joseph living at Sidlesham with his step-grandmother, Mary Grant, formerly Chaffer. She would die in 1879, by which time Joseph was a young man in his early twenties.
Joseph's next sighting is in 1884 when he was married at St Pancras in Middlesex, a northern suburb of London. His wife was Annie Furney, from Monmouth in Wales. After their marriage they settled at Monmouth, where the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses all find them living at Agincourt Square and with Joseph working as a tobacconist. They had three children together.
Joseph died in 1945 in Gloucestershire aged about 85.
