Death: 17 Oct 2007 (aged 89) Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
Burial: Cremated, Ashes scattered at sea

    Memorial #: 22289570
Bio: Entertainer. Fondly remembered for his droll and dejected facial expressions, Bishop began his career as a standup comedian and later proved to be a versatile actor in films and television. Additionally, he was known for his association with Frank Sinatra’s unofficial ensemble affectionately known as the “Rat Pack” of which also included Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Lawford. Born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb in the Bronx, New York to an Austrian-Jewish father and a Romanian-Jewish mother, his father was a bicycle repairman, Joey was raised in South Philadelphia and learned to speak Yiddish during his childhood. He initiated his career performing standup comedy on the “Borscht Belt” circuit in the Catskill Mountains of New York, prior to his service with the United States Army during World War II. Following his return home, he resumed his career in comedy and began his lengthy association with television in an episode of the program “Cavalcade of Stars” in 1950. This led to an abundance of television appearances on such programs as “The Jack Paar Show”, “The Ed Sullivan Show”, “The Frank Sinatra Show” and as a guest panelist in several episodes of the series “What’s My Line?”, “Celebrity Sweepstakes”, “The Hollywood Squares”, among many others. During the course of his career, Bishop had the distinction of appearing on “The Tonight Show” during Johnny Carson’s run as host more than one hundred and ninety times of which included guest host. He had his own situation comedy TV series “The Joey Bishop Show” (1961 to 1965) and a talk show format of the same title of which ran from 1967 until 1969. He made his film debut in the picture “The Deep Six” (1958) and followed this with a memorable performance as the doomed soldier ‘Roth’ in the war drama “The Naked and the Dead” (1958). During his time with the “Rat Pack”, he appeared in the films “Ocean’s Eleven” (1960) and “Sergeants Three” (1962). Additional films include “Texas Across the River” (1966), “Who’s Minding the Mint?” (1967) and “The Delta Force” (1986).
