There was a "Joe Connell", age 25, listed in the 1860 Census, residing in Meriwether County, Georgia, Magdalena Post Office, residing in the household of and employed as an overseer by G. R. Rollins. This household was very near that of Joseph Connell's older brother Robert P. Connell.

    Affidavit of Widow, dated October 31, 1898 at Pike County, Georgia, states that Joseph Connell died at Pike County, Georgia, on August 15, 1897. It states that he was "wounded in the head at Cold Harbour Virginia". The Application and supporting affidavits consistently report that Joseph enlisted in 1861. The Affidavit of Widow, dated October 31, 1898, states that his date of enlistment was October 1, 1861, as does the supporting November 2, 1898 affidavit of J. F. Lewis. The January 13, 1900 application gives the date as June, 1861.

    The initial application, executed April 15, 1895, reflects that Joseph Connell, 63, was born in Georgia, and enlisted June 19, 1863, at which time he was from Talbot County, Georgia, volunteered for Bennings Brigade, 2nd Regiment, Company B, with which he remained until the close of war, when he was paroled in Virginia. At the time of his application he had four living sons, aged 28, 22, 17 and 14. He signed by his mark the application and a Power of Attorney, appointing R.L Connell, No 713 Marietta Street, Fulton County, Georgia, who is identified in his wife's pension application as their son. See Note 3 above. His 1897 Application states that he had resided in the State of Georgia continuously since July 27, 1832.

    These applications and supporting affidavits consistently report that Joseph enlisted in 1861 and served 4 years, or, alternatively, until the close of the war.
