Joseph Willard Buzzell came to California about 1841, when he deserted the whaler Orizaba at Halfmoon Bay. He spent some time with Isaac Graham at Santa Cruz; then he became a trapper for Sutter until 1843. That year he went to Oregon, where he married on of the Kelsey daughters. In 1844 he returned to California with the Kelsey party. He served with Sutter against Micheltorena, worked for Leidesdorff, served in the California Battalion, settled in Stockton as early as 1848, and drowned at Halfmoon Bay a few years before 1879.
