"26. Joseph (Buckingham), born August 7, 1703. Joseph graduated at Yale in the class of 1723; studied law and resided, during his life, at Hartford; was a man of finished education; enjoyed the confidence and respect of his fellow townsmen, and held, during his life, many important offices of trust, which he discharged with ability. He never married, and died Nov. 29, 1760, aged 57. His property was appraised June 23, 1761. He had two lots of land of 100 acres each, and an undivided right of land in Winchester, appraised at £225. The inventory, exclusive of the above, amounted to £1,013 10s. 6d., dated June 24, 1761—quite a sum for those days. His verbal will, as to his personal estate, was proved in court, before Daniel Edwards, judge, May 8, 1761. Administration on the real estate was granted to his cousin, Rev. Daniel Buckingham, of Fairfield, May 19, 1761. Rev. Daniel Buckingham then took an appeal from the decision of said court, approving of the nuncupative will of said Joseph, to the Superior Court at Hartford, to be held on the 1st Tuesday of September then next, on the ground of being an heir to said estate. At the Court of Probate holden at Hartford June 24, 1761. Daniel Edwards, judge, the court ordered and appointed Messrs. Ozias Goodwin, Daniel Skinner, and Richard Edwards, of Hartford, or any two of them, to distribute the real estate of said Joseph, deceased, to Rev. Mr. Daniel Buckingham, of Fairfield; John and Josiah Buckingham; Jane Treat, wife of Robert Treat. Esq.; Clemence, wife of Joseph Treat, and Alice, wife of Edmond Treat, of Milford, heirs to said estate, equally.

The widow Ann Burnham, (mother of said Joseph deceased) on the 25th day of June, 1761, appealed from the judgment of the court in appointing Rev. Daniel Buckingham administrator on the real estate; also appealed from the judgment rendered on the 24th of June─which was allowed─to the Superior Court to be held September, 1761, ─administration granted to Ann Burnham, mother of Joseph Buckingham, Esq., deceased, June 9, 1764. Inventory of personal estate, dated July, 1764, is £541 12s 9d. The court granted administration to Joseph Church, Esq., on the estate of Joseph Buckingham, deceased, 1768, probably, in consequence of the death of Mrs. Burnham."
