The following is from the obituary for Joseph Barricklow Joseph came to Kansas in April, 1855, and settled in old Palmyra. He was a "Free State Man" during the border ruffian war and aided very much in making Kansas a free State. He inlisted in the 9th Kansas and made a brave soldier, never shirking duty. After being mustered out he acted as foreman of a gang of men that graded the first railroad in Kansas. About the time Baker University was in very great need financially, this man, seeing the needs, gave eighty acres of land to help in the difficulty. For some years he was in the mercantile business in Baldwin. He then moved to Coffeyville, KS, where he pursued the same vocation. In 1875-76 he was treasurer of Montgomery County. He then moved to Skiatook, I.T. Where he has since made his home until last June, when poor health obliged him to suspend business and he came to make his home with his brother (Sanford) Cass, where he lived until death relieved hims suffering on Dec. 29. He was one of nine children, some of whom are dead. Those who are left to mourn his loss are Cass Barricklow, Dike Barricklow, and Mrs. Daniel Fry, of Baldwin City, Mrs. Charlott Barricklow, of Rising Sun. Ind., and Mrs. Charles Lovejoy, of Bridgewater. S.D. For many years, he has been an honored and faithful member of the masonic order. He died in the home of his brother, Sanford Cass Barricklow. Dec. 29, 1902. |
