- ↑ Does anybody really know how old Jonas is? The death record (cited, also I3) gives his birth as Sep 1832, which is 10 years older than the 1900 census (I1), which says Sep 1842. Even worse, the 1910 census (I2), 10 years later, only shows him aging 6 years, as if born 1847. Earlier censuses, such as 1855 (which is probably him) gives 1836, and 1870 gives 1836 as well. In 1880, the birth jumps to 1843. The marriage in 1865 lists his age as 27 (b. 1838), and in 1872 as 29 (1843).
The marriage records list his parents as Jonas and Jerusha Parmenter (1865), and Jonas and Jerusha (Bigelow) Parmenter (1872). [Mother's maiden name somewhat hard to read, transcribed in one instance as "Deyslow", but not important to this discussion.] One other person's record lists the same set of parents, Jonas and Jerusha Parmenter, that being the marriage of Alonzo Parmeter. Alonzo seems born in 1839-1840 fairly consistently across his record set, and is found living with his mother "Jerutia Parmenter" in 1850. No sign of Jonas or the father Jonas. This suggests the son Jonas is older than Alonzo, and able to be apprenticed or otherwise on his own, supporting the idea that he was born in the mid-1830's, not the mid-1840's.
The mother Jerusha is age 40 in 1850, so born about 1810. A possible father Jonas Parmeter is the son of Silas b. 1809, with no documented marriage. But if so, they might have separated or divorced as Jonas appears to be living in Princeton in 1850. Or the father might be a different Jonas altogether, even though no death or other record of him has been found.
