The Basra Memorial bears the names of more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the operations in Mesopotamia from the autumn of 1914 to the end of August 1921 and whose graves are not known. 1st /4th Bn., Dorsetshire Regiment, was raised as part of the 43rd (Wessex) Division and then became part of the 15th Indian Division which was formed in Mesopotamia in 1916. Although the Battalion was not involved in many actions it is probable that Private J.Hardy was killed during the Action of As Sahikan on 11th September 1916.

Jonathan Hardy was born in Maiden Newton and enlisted in Dorchester whilst living in the village.
