John Riley York was born 19 Oct 1924[6] in West Plains, Missouri, the son of Louis Alexander York and Nancy Jane Helen Myers. He joined the Marines in Arkansas on December 9, 1942 and was part of Co K, 2nd Marine Division, PFC. While deployed to Saipan he was killed by a sniper on June 27, 1944 during a battle. The Battle of Saipan was fought by the 2 Marine Division, 4th Marine Division, and the 27th Infantry, commanded by Lieutenant General Holland Smith. They defeated the 43rd Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, commanded by Lieutenant General Yoshitsugu Saito between June 15, 1944 and July 9, 1944. John died on June 27, 1944[6]. His remains were returned to the United States in 1948 and are interred in the U. S. National Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee[6].
