  32. The training took 5 years under two different employers:-

*The first two years he worked in Perth, after completing his first two years of training he transfered to Yarloop at Millars' Karri and Jarrah Company (1902) Ltd.
*The last three years he worked for Millars' Karri and Jarrah Company (1902) Ltd. Yarloop is located 125 km south of Perth.

John , known as "Palmer" when he finished his apprenticeship as a fitter after 5 years of training

It appears as though the entire family relocated to Yarloop at around the same time as John changed jobs, perhaps the change of jobs was brought about by his family relocating themselves in Yarloop.
    Notes
[In 1901 Millars made Yarloop the central workshop for their entire milling operations in South East Western Australia. At their peak Millars companies (they amalgamated in 1902 under the name Millars Karri and Jarrah Company) employed over 500 people in the Yarloop area.]
  33. Records showed that he enlisted using the name Jack by which he was commonly known (not John his birthname). His original engagement was as an as Engine Room Artificer IV for a period of 5 years, however he left after one year, by purchase, this appears to have been his own decision as the records show his character was very good and his work was satisfactory.

His postings in the were as follows:-
*between 5 Mar 1912 and 30 Jun 1912 he was at the Naval Depot at Williamstown
*between 1 Jul 1912 and 23 Oct 1912 he was on the HMAS 'Pararrmatta' invovled in sea exercises in Australian waters, as an Engine Room Artificer
*between 24 Oct 1912 and 10 Mar 1913 back at the Naval Depot at Williamstown

    Comments

    Places
The Williamstown Naval Depot - The Engineer Training Section of The Williamstown Training Depot was the only Naval training Centre in Australia for engineering branch sailors. Consolidation of training of those soldiers was carried out on board ships of the Australian Squadron and the Australian Axiliary Squadron. Until 1921, Engine Room Artificers for the Royal Australian Navy were recruited either from the Royal Navy or from shore as partially or fully trained tradesmen of the Fitter, Boiler maker, Pattermnaker, Coppersmith, and Engine Smith Trades. Glossary
An artificer means {artificer (noun) - armorer, armourer, artificer - an enlisted man responsible for the upkeep of small arms and machine guns etc. [1]} another word would be Engine Fitter.

Purchase indicates that he resigned rather than was dissmissed from service on his own terms, the reason for his leaving the service is not known, however he apparently continued to serve with the RAN Reserve on a Part Time basis and probably worked also as a Merchant Mariner.
  34. on the ship "Patrol". He registered and was discharged in Singapore. He worked as Assistant Engineer.

(By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided, therefore, to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917.

8 Squadron, AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. It was originally identified as 33 (Australian Training) Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, but was renamed, along with all of the Australian squadrons, in January 1918. The squadron relocated to Cirencester on 9 January 1918, and thence to Leighterton, where it remained until disbanded in April 1919.

The squadron's principal role was to prepare personnel for service with what was at first 71 (Australian) Squadron, RFC, and subsequently 4 Squadron, AFC, which was operating with British forces over the Western Front. [APPENDIX No. 5.
    A.F.C. TRAINING IN ENGLAND.
The system of training pilots of the Australia ii squadrons in Engladn: during the first eight months of 1917 is described by Captain E. G. Knox, Recording Officer of No. 3 Squadron. In the main, what he says of NO. .? Squadron holds good also for the others.

Mechanics.-The training of the mechanics of the squadrons was a highly important work. A mechanic could make or mar the efficiency of a machine in air fighting, and every successful pilot during the war learned the importance of having his machine well kept. The tradesmen of whom air-mechanics are composed are :-Acetylene-welders, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, fitters (engine), riggers. Electricians, magneto-repairers, fitters (general), and machinists.

Fitters (general) performed work entirely different from that of fitters (engine). They were employed in repair-parks and depots, working with machinists. Fitters (general) entered Section 7. for eight-weeks' instruction, and then passed on to Section 8. In this
section machinists were trained for sixteen weeks in the use of machine tools, and fitters (general) remained for eight-weeks' instruction,
working in conjunction with the machinists. This training was to enable them to carry out work on machine-tools which did not require specialists, such as drilling, plain turning, shaping.information found at the <http://www.awm.gov.au/cms_images/histories/9/chapters/32.pdf>]
  49. the The squadron relocated to Leighterton AFC Depot.
